Industrial Material Researcher
We are looking for an Industrial Material Researcher with knowledge of applied material research, preferably with a background in mining or construction applications. The primary location for this role is Espoo or Kannonkoski with the possibility of hybrid work.
In this role, you will focus on the study of industrial sidestreams and alkali-activated materials (AAMs), as well as creating innovative research initiatives. The industrial sidestreams include, for example, metallurgical slags, residues, mine tailings, and supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). The role involves creating low-carbon solutions that utilize these materials in full-scale production. All Betolar’s researchers work closely with our laboratorians, engineers, and other cross-functional teams, as well as with our clients.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop cost-competitive and sustainable mix designs utilizing locally available materials for industrial applications
- Conduct comprehensive research on the usability of various industrial sidestreams for mining, construction and infrastructure related applications
- Plan and execute physical, chemical, and durability testing, ensuring compliance with industry standards
- Scale up lab-scale testing into full-scale production, including pilot planning and quality control measures
- Provide technical support to customers and sales regarding material applications and performance
- Explore and promote the environmental benefits of blended cements and alkali-activated materials (AAMs)
- Actively contribute to a culture of continuous improvement through research, innovation, and knowledge sharing
Requirements:
- MSc or higher education in materials science, materials engineering, inorganic chemistry, or a related engineering field
- Hands-on experience in materials testing
- Industrial experience, preferably in construction or mining industries
- Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks effectively
- Self-motivated, proactive and adaptable in a fast-paced startup environment
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with diverse teams
- Interest and adaptability in testing and utilizing new tools, including AI-assisted material research workflows
- Excellent communication skills, fluency in English (both written and spoken). Willingness to travel as required.
We also value:
- Background in cement chemistry, AAMs, and SCMs and their industrial scalability
- Knowledge of environmental and technical challenges related to sustainable cement in construction and mining industries
- Experience of large-scale material processing, such as grinding, heat treatment, granulation, and separation methods
- Experience of process metallurgy and thermodynamic modeling
- Experience of project management
